Bone Grafts

Before getting dental implants, it is important that you have a healthy jawbone. The jawbone acts as a foundation to support your dental implants. At the International Center for Advanced Dentistry, we are committed to providing you with optimal dental care to last for many years!

What are Bone Grafts?

Bone grafting is a method used to repair an infected or damaged jawbone. Since dental implants are anchored directly into the jawbone, it is important that your jawbone is healthy and strong. Bone grafts replace missing jawbone material to not only provide a strong foundation, but it also pauses the premature aging process.

Types of Bone Grafts

There are three main types of bone grafts such as:

Autograft
  • Bone is harvested from elsewhere in the body (i.e. hip, leg)

  • Includes live bone

  • Bone regenerates due to living cells

Allograft
  • Bone harvested from a cadaver

  • Non-living bone cells; no regeneration

  • Acts as a framework to fill the void

Xenograft
  • Bone harvested from a living species (i.e. cows)

  • Non-living bone cells; no regeneration

  • Acts as a framework to fill the void

Treatment

On the day of the procedure, you will be provided with Oral Sedation to alleviate pain. The bone graft procedure can be done after a tooth extraction to preserve healthy bone in the alveolus or as a secondary surgery to increase the width of the ridge to allow for future placement of an implant!
